There are three things you are going to need:

• a domain name – this is web address which is typed into the internet browser so the user can navigate to your website;

• WordPress theme and software – WordPress is free to use and download, as are many of the themes available (of which there are hundreds and probably thousands available), though you can pay for WordPress themes or customization if you want it; and

Domain Name

Your domain name can be the one allocated by WordPress but, though this is free it does not look professional and it do anything to help you create an online branding identity, which is very important.

You can typically source domain names very cheaply from sites such as GoDaddy or HostGator, but if you are looking for a name which contains very common or desired words or phrases, expect to pay a lot of money for the name.

Ideally, you want a name which is easy to remember, easy to type into a web browser and has a close degree of affinity with your product or service offering.

WordPress

You can download the WordPress software and themes for free from WordPress.org as well as gain immediate access to a huge support community, for technical and commercial advice with any issues you may have.

WordPress allows you to manage the content displayed on your site from the text, images, navigation buttons and a host of other content, typically managed by the use of “widgets”. Widgets come in all shapes and sizes, and typically are used to provide changing content using your sidebars, headers and footers around your central page content.

You will also find that WordPress has an eCommerce “plugin”; a plugin is simply an additional feature which is added to the WordPress theme to deliver additional functionality. The Social Bookmarks plugin gives your visitors the ability to bookmark your site on a range of social bookmark sites without ever leaving your site. This useful functionality can help build long term traffic as these bookmarks may be followed by other social bookmark site users (the links are also good for search engine ranking). Highly configurable and produces nice graphic output

3) Twitter Tools

Twitter Tools automatically post excerpts of your blog posts to your twitter page (and your twitter tweets to your blog page if you so desire). Another fantastic way to build traffic and links to your site plus once it is configured it is a set and forget utility that just works in the background without any user intervention.

4) Twitter Tools -Bit.ly urls

An extension of the Twitter Tools plugin that adds the ability to post short URLs in the output of the twitter tools plugin. This is important as twitter only allows 140 characters per post so you do not want to use up the majority of these characters with a full domain name rather than the content of your blog post.

5) Wordbook

Works in a very similar way to the Twitter Tools described earlier except it posts to your Facebook pages. Another great way to build traffic and backlinks and all done automatically behind the scenes once it has been configured.

6) WordPress Mobile Pack

This plugin allows users who are accessing your WordPress site via a mobile site switch to a site design / layout that is optimised for such devices. It is more than just a plugin it is also a site layout. Useful for this blogs / sites that may have an audience that uses mobile devices extensively (and lets face it as technology advances this may be everyone!)

7) WP Super Popup

Some people may see this plugin as a bad thing as it generates popup messages for your site (it creates these popups as layer within the existing site design rather than separate windows that a popup killer would terminate). It is highly configurable and provides a really slick way of delivering popups if you decide that you want them on your site.

Shortcut #2: Plug and Play Content Creation

It’s no secret that some of the very best blogs are simple, useful and “list” driven. What does this mean? Simple! Lots and lots of lists! 5 ways to do this. 7 ways to do that. 3 tips for something else. The beauty of these sorts of sites is that not only can you sort of interplay and overview LOTS of topics quickly, people (and search engines) love these sort of bulleted blurbs that are short, sweet and easy to read. I simply create a master list of “power” words, and plug in an article a day, per niche in this simple format, often giving the very same topics a FRESH spin simply by changing the way in which they are presented to my readers! Very easy, and effortlessly efficient as well..:-)

Here we are with part two in the series of how to make your blog one of the most interactive blogs on the Internet. In part one we looked at the value of allowing people to comment on your articles, we considered allowing people to be emailed when someone replies to a commentators comment and we looked at making the URL in the name field a ‘do follow’ link. We also considered a plugin for social networks like Facebook and Twitter. One of the best WordPress plugins for this is ‘Socialize’ or ‘AddtoAny.’

Now lets cover a few more items that will add more interaction to your blog.

TweetMeMe
Have you seen an icon on a post that says “Tweet” and tells you how many Tweets a blog post has? This is another great WordPress plugin called TweetMeMe. This will allow people to Tweet your post on their Twitter account. This is interactive for them and more viral marketing for you.

Comment Rating
This is yet another WordPress plugin that will put a little green thumbs up hand and a little red thumbs down hand on your comments. This will allow people to simply click the green or red hand to applaud or deject a comment left by another. People just love to comment on other people’s comments, don’t they? This is a great asset to making your blog one of the most interactive blogs.

Community
There is a WordPress plugin for joining a kind of site community. I tried this and honestly I did not like it but I am sure it is very appropriate for someone’s blog. People do love to feel like they are part of a private club.

Forum
If you are real serious about a particular topic and plan to be very focused you may want to consider adding a forum to your blog. This can draw lots of traffic and become a place where people will come to share and grow together. These can become like little communities and I am part of forums where we know each other and it is a great experience. Both communities and forums will creative interactive blogs.

Surveys/Polls
Like I said previously, people like to comment and be heard. You can create an enjoyable and profitable exercise for people to do with surveys and/or polls. If you had a site that was heavily involved in Mac products now would be the perfect time to take a poll about the new iPad. In a few weeks you could take a survey from the people that bought the iPad and see how they liked it. This is another value tool to make your blog one of the most interactive blogs.
