When I decided that I wanted to work online, I knew that I’d need a website. From listening to other people, I knew that I would need a blog too. I was 52 years old, and had no training of any kind in using computers – and I use a Mac too, which always seemed to scare people when I said it!

I had heard people talk of Webmasters – someone to set up your site for you, so that you didn’t have to think about how to do it at all. So that is what I did at first. I hired someone to build my site for me. I was lucky, because a friend did it for a reduced rate, so I didn’t pay a huge amount of money compared to some people I have heard of, who have spent thousands of dollars. However, the difficulties I faced were the same as many who had paid thousands to have their sites built by a webmaster – it was so hard to have changes made and to update things.

If you’re the same as me, you don’t know exactly what you want to put on your site when you’re starting off, or exactly how you want it to look. I need to see something before I know what I want to change about it. I found it very frustrating to have to explain to someone what I wanted, and then to have to wait while a small change was made.

My next step was to try and build a site myself, using FrontPage and RapidWeaver. It took me weeks and weeks of toil and headaches, but I eventually got a site up, but I was never really pleased with it.

Around this time, I started learning more about blogs, and WordPress in particular. At first I thought that WordPress was only for blogging, and I thought I needed to set up a website first. I was wrong – I seemed to keep coming across websites that I really liked that were WordPress sites.

As I explored this more – I realised that this was the way I wanted to go. Once you have the basics it is easy to set up a site. I started with my blog, and then learnt how to add pages and built up my whole website. This time I decided to get a good teacher to show me the nest way to do it – to save myself some of the headaches of my previous tries. I was so lucky that I found one of the best teachers I have ever had – and I’ve had a lot!! (I was a classroom teacher myself for many years), I can’t believe how easy it is now to just go in and change something on my site. If I need a new site for something, I can set it up in less than an hour. I can’t tell you how miraculous it is to me after all the struggles, to be able to do this.

FIRST STEPS

Sign up for WordPress.org, – this will give you more control over your site. Get a hosting account – usually about $7 a month for unlimited sites – make sure that your hosting company has a C panel Purchase a domain name and link it to your hosting account. Set up WordPress using simplescripts Choose a Theme – there are plenty of free ones, and also many paid ones that are not very expensive. Start blogging. To set up a Website use the Pages rather than the posts, and you can start building your site. You’ll want to add some plugins and widgets to make things easier for you.

If all this seems like a foreign language to you, it did to me too until I started learning how to do it – even when I was writing it then, I was shocked by how familiar and comfortable I feel with it all now.
